County to take fresh look at smoking penalties
(2003, May 20). San Mateo County Times.

REDWOOD CITY -- San Mateo County Supervisors will reconsider a
two-year-old ordinance that required a $25 permit fee from tobacco
vendors and instituted penalties for selling tobacco to minors.

The ordinance requires renewal, and Supervisor Mike Nevin said he would
be open to raising the permit fee and increasing the penalties.

"(The ordinance) needs enforcement to work," Nevin said Monday.

The hikes would be used in conjunction with inspections and
enforcement.

"Kids are still smoking and we have to do something about it," Nevin
said.

No retailers have been fined under the existing code, which calls for a
$100 penalty for the first violation, $200 for the second, and $500 for
the third.

A May 21 meeting is set for considering the changes.
